Bill Belichick told ref before OT that Patriots would kick off
“Coach Belichick is so smart”.

There are a lot of people questioning Bill Belichick’s decision to defer at the start of overtime, but given the new overtime format, the reason to opt to kickoff made the most sense.
It was hard to make heads or tails out of some of the baffling calls in the NFL’s Week 16, notably Bill Belichick’s decision to keep Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski with him on the sideline at the start of overtime.
Struggling offensively for the majority of the game, the Patriots offense finally broke through on a late-game touchdown from Tom Brady to running back James White.
With his first catch of the game, Marshall broke the Jets’ single-season record for most receptions, set in 1988 by Al Toon (93).
Brandon Marshall was already rooting on the New York Jets’ defense when New England won the overtime coin toss.
What should have happened is that Slater should have known that the team that wins the toss can choose to kick or receive OR which goal to defend.
In November, Mike Zimmer and the Minnesota Vikings also kicked in overtime against the St. Louis Rams at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. With a very small sample size, the receiving team has won 50.7 of overtime games since the National Football League changed its OT rules before the 2012 season. There have been several occasions when the Patriots have scored at the end of the half and then gotten the ball right back after halftime. The Patriots historically have always played to win, even when the games have been meaningless.
Just as the Patriots and Jets ended regulation with a tie game, in came the shocking result that was the Steelers’ 20-17 loss to the Ravens. “It was a great team win”.
Even as I write this, I am aware of the sacrilege that is questioning Belichick, who has won four Super Bowl’s with his standoffish persona and his personality that has inspired a cult following through the NFL. If Belichick’s infamous decision to go on fourth down against the Colts in 2011 paid off, would people still criticize him?
I’ve lost track of all the times that the Jets were just one or two plays away from knocking off the Patriots, only to see Brady prove clutch and the Jets choke.
“Well, [the offense] was better, but again, there were two fourth-down conversions that we had to make that”, Brady said. “The way that we did [respond to the adversity], it kind of gave us that second wind like, hey, you know, this really is the team that we thought we were”.
The Patriots have also been noticeably turning down these “double down” opportunities in recent weeks. After the former practice squad player burst onto the scene and led the Patriots in rushing last week against Tennessee, he only had one touch for no gain against NY.
“Nothing surprises you about the Patriots and strategy and what they think”, said Fitzpatrick, who finished 26 of 41 for 296 yards and three touchdowns but had had a fumble returned for a touchdown by Jamie Collins to begin New England’s second-half comeback. But to make the move and then have the NFL’s Byzantine rulebook begin parsing parts of speech at the precise worst time, well, that’s just piling on. They did, however, try a slew of trick plays – putting Brady out wide and running out of the wildcat formation, and trying a flea flicker with new running back Steven Jackson. The two can be seen squaring up and trading a few blows when another Jets fan comes from behind and appears to push the Pats fan to the ground. Brady never touched the ball.
Every so often, Bill Belichick seems to get a little too cute in a high-leverage situation for his own good.
“I don’t think there was any confusion”, Belichick said. That’s a good football team, well-coached. When healthy, this team can blow the doors off of anyone, but they are not, and need to be coached as such.
