Bill Clinton portrays wife Hillary as change-maker in speech to Democrats

It was aimed mostly at Democrats – especially Bernie Sanders Democrats – who have either forgotten about Hillary Clinton’s early years or, more likely, never knew that part of her story.

This time, Clinton shattered the glass ceiling she couldn’t crack in 2008. But critically, with each anecdote (and, whoa boy, were there anecdotes!) he aimed to undermine the reputation that has dogged Clinton throughout her political career-a politician who is inauthentic, calculating, and self-motivated.

It was the keynote speech on the Democrats’ second convention night, an evening that focused on promoting Hillary rather than blasting Trump.

It was an attempt to both introduce and remind voters of her decades-long resume of service as a practicing lawyer, first lady, senator and secretary of state.

“I’m going to put (him) in charge of revitalizing the economy”, Clinton said in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, this May. Moments after she claimed the nomination, a group of Sanders supporters left the convention and headed to a media tent to protest at what they said was their being shut out of the party. The campaign has worked on that message in recent months, and this week’s convention is aimed squarely at presenting that Clinton to the bigger general election audience. – Sybrina Fulton, the mother of unarmed black Florida teen Trayvon Martin, who was shot dead in 2012 by a volunteer neighborhood watchman. “She has the courage to lead the fight for commonsense gun legislation”.

And recent polls show her vying with Trump for every percentage point. She is also dogged by low public trust that has most recently been fueled by her use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State.

A few days after meeting, Clinton recalled that he saw her again, waiting in line to register for classes, and he joined her. “We stood in line and talked… and I thought I was doing pretty well”.

Isabel Baker, an 88-year-old delegate from Oklahoma, was born in 1929, just nine years after women were given the right to vote. “The Democratic Party has got to open its doors”, Sanders said.

Jaladah Aslam of Austintown, a Clinton delegate, said, “I’m over the moon that this process is over and we can truly start the business of campaigning to get the first woman elected president”.

The Roll Call: I am a sucker for state pride and weird facts about all 50 states. She has served as a Democratic delegate at conventions in the past.

First lady Michelle Obama was a star of opening night, making an impassioned case for Clinton as the only candidate in the presidential race worthy of being a role model for the nation’s children. Barack Obama returns to the convention stage Wednesday as the battle-hardened president hoping his legacy won’t be eroded by the outcome of the election to replace him.
