Bill Cosby’s lawyer accuses prosecutor of playing politics

Bill Cosby has been charged with sexual assault in relation to a 2004 accusation in Pennsylvania.
“Make no mistake: We intend to mount a vigorous defense against this unjustified charge, and we expect that Mr. Cosby will be exonerated by a court of law”, his attorney Monique Pressley said in a statement.
“What we have now”, she added, “is not the effectuation of justice”. He did not enter a plea and spoke only to confirm he understood the terms of his bail, which was set at $1 million (£666,670).
The former Cosby Show star appeared in Philadelphia District Court Wednesday to face accusations by alleged victim Andrea Constand, whose case was reopened just before the end of its 12-year statute of limitations.
Cosby then urged her to take three pills and insisted she drink wine to relax.
The charge was laid just days before the 12-year statute of limitations for bringing charges was set to run out. Cosby was arraigned Wednesday afternoon at hearing in which the charges were read.
Castor tried to reclaim his job as DA in the November election but lost to Steele in a hotly contested race in which the Cosby case played a central role.
After the charges came down, Cosby’s attorney accused Steele of “playing political football” with Cosby’s life.
A deposition taken in this civil case was made public during the summer.
There’s no doubt the charges are a win for the women who have made allegations against Cosby – and for women in general. In it, Cosby acknowledged under questioning that he had obtained Quaaludes, a sedative that was a popular recreational drug in the 1970s, intending to give them to young women in order to have sex with them. “He’s fulfilling a campaign process”, the attorney says of Kevin Steele.
Constand, who has sought in court to unseal the record of her civil case and settlement with Cosby, said in legal documents filed in July that she is a lesbian, despite his sworn assertions that their encounter was consensual and that he was adept at picking up on women’s cues. “Hopefully now many of these women will get to tell their stories in a court of law and the people who supported him will get deposed”, director Judd Apatow tweeted.
Guided by his lawyers, he walked slowly and unsteadily into the courtroom, using a cane and wearing a gray tweed hoodie sweater. Inside, he seemed to have trouble seeing the paperwork and finding the place to sign, and his lawyers helped him hold the pen.
Cosby has also filed defamation suits against seven of the women accusing him of sexual assault or misconduct.
One woman, Judy Huth, has sued on the basis of repressed psychological injuries she claimed to have suffered from an alleged sexual assault in 1974 at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles when she was 15. Constand reported the incident to police at the time, who investigated and closed the case when officials declined to prosecute.

A key question if the case goes to trial is whether the judge will allow supporting testimony from other accusers to show similar “bad acts”, even though it is too late to bring charges in most if not all of those instances. The judge told Cosby, “Good luck to you”, to which Cosby responded, “Thank you”.
