Bill Murray, Rooney Mara nominated for SAG Awards

It may be the most wonderful time of the year in other ways, but movies opening on or around Christmas traditionally face a significant hurdle when it comes to landing nominations. If the brains behind Spotlight decide to submit Keaton as a lead, that would open up the category a little, but today’s nomination has jettisoned Elba to the front of the pack. Compton faces off against the Idris Elba-led Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short starring Christian Bale, Spotlight with Mark Ruffalo, and the Bryan Cranston-anchored Trumbo for the honor.

Idris Elba stormed the SAG proceedings with three nominations – best actor and for the ensemble cast in Beasts of No Nation, as well as best actor for TV’s Luther.

The 22nd annual SAG awards winners will be announced on January 30 in Los Angeles.

While Straight Outta Compton was a box office and critical hit, its award season prospects were unknown.

The first signs of awards season are nominee announcements, and there’s cause to celebrate in the Straight Outta Compton camp.

Among the women, Cate Blanchett was nominated for the lesbian drama “Carol”, Brie Larson for psychological thriller “Room”, Saoirse Ronan for Irish immigrant tale “Brooklyn” and Sarah Silverman for “I Smile Back”. Mirren was additionally nominated for greatest actress for “Woman in Gold”.

And both awards shows crowned the same four winners in 2014, including Redmayne and Julianne Moore for best actor and actress, and J.K Simmons and Patricia Arquette for best supporting actor and actress.

In the category of outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble in a motion picture, the nominees are the teams that worked on “Everest“, “Furious 7“, “Jurassic World“, “Mad Max: Fury Road“, and “Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation”. She added a third mention as part of the nominated ensemble cast for Trumbo.

Carol Burnett will receive a lifetime achievement award at the ceremony.

She received her SAG nomination in the TV movie/mini-series actress category for Grace of Monaco, the critically-slammed biopic that American producer Harvey Weinstein refused to release in United States cinemas. Many were offended when all the 2015 Oscars acting nominees were white.

In addition to Elba’s nomination, other nominees included Queen Latifah for Bessie, Uzo Aduba for Orange is the New Black and Viola Davis for How to Get Away With Murder. Members of the SAG Awards nominating committee were invited to screenings of the latter, though.
