Bill O’Brien Discusses Relationship with Rick Smith After Ryan Mallett’s Release
After sleeping through a practice back in August, then the team flight to Miami over the weekend, then nearly getting cut on the spot by Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien only to be saved by General Manager Rick Smith, the ax has finally fallen.

Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed the news, saying the two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback is preparing to play Sunday against unbeaten Cincinnati after missing four games with a sprained knee and bruised leg.
After Hoyer struggled in Houston’s Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Mallett was named the starter, starting the ensuing three games while earning a 1-2 record with a 19-9 home victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3.
Appearing on Boston radio station WEEI on Monday, Brady was asked if Mallett was: “that big of a knucklehead when he was here or is that just something that happened in Houston?” ‘I’ve always – Ryan and I have always had a great relationship.
As bad as the loss on the field was – and down 41-0 at halftime, it was pretty bad – O’Brien’s loss in the boardroom appeared to be just as damaging before Tuesday’s belated about-face.
McClain also reports that the Texans are attempting to bring back quarterback T.J. Yates to replace Mallett.
Having watched that Texans-Colts game from up close, Ross KNEW that the quarterback’s time with Houston was to be short-lived.
“I wouldn’t say what he did was a distraction, but you have to have accountability and this was obviously the final straw for the organization”.
Bill O’Brien, rightfully pissed off that one of his players has thrown a bitchfit by pretending to get caught up in traffic, wants to cut Mallett before the game. Mallett had a guarantee of $1.75 million this season.
“I don’t know if that is something I can answer because I am not the one making those calls”, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins said. Good luck to Ryan wherever he winds up, but we’ve got our own things to work on.
Tennessee Titans rookie Marcus Mariota will not play Sunday against Atlanta as he recovers from a sprained MCL in his left knee. Mallett, of course, infamously missed practice the day after learning he would be the team’s backup headed into the season… Mallett missed the teams flight to Miami the previous week.

Yates initially was a fifth-round draft pick for the Texans in 2011 and started in the franchise’s first playoff win when then-starter Matt Schaub was hurt.
