Bill Z interviews Adam DeVine of ‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’

If anything, “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” relies on amusing, which is fine, as a lot of films can’t even get that right, but this film stumbles when it tires to be deep for five minutes. They’re reminiscent of the ladies on Broad City, except arguably even more immature and foul-mouthed. Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates includes a great humor and a classic and loving story, it going to make the audience laugh hardly and they seriously going to have a stomachache, as the acting of the characters is so fantastic and they played them so well. Reckless, hard-partying, and utterly charming, these guys are like millennial versions of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers.

While I wasn’t dying laughing like I was with “Spy”, “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” is anything but “Dirty Grandpa”. It would be easy to push the boundaries for the sake of comedy, but essentially this is a amusing movie about family and how they can drive you insane. In an effort to get them to cool down, their parents beg them to line up dates for their sister’s upcoming wedding.

How better to do that than advertise on Craigslist? By the time Mike and Dave realize this, all hell has already broken loose. After interviewing several women, who want a free, deluxe trip to Hawaii, including a pair of very dumb twins, the dates Mike and Dave pick only pretend to be good girls.

Alice is the better-drawn of the two, perhaps because she’s given a past and fears and tics that she’ll inevitably run headfirst into or act on, while Tatiana’s just crude and … there. In real life, the wedding was in Saratoga, New York, but this is a movie where everything based on a true story plays with the facts to serve the narrative, so the movie takes place in Hawaii. He stages a number of very amusing scenes, particularly a sensual massage sequence involving the bride-to-be and a male masseuse hilariously played by Kumail Nanjiani. We all know where the characters are going to end up and what’s going to be learned. We even included some shots from the trailer so that you can see the resort in action!

Devine’s character is the only one who grates a little – the result of a mix of Jack Black vocal impersonation and Jim Carey facial gymnastics, which gets a little tiring. This movie, however, should never have been seen alongside my darling mother. “Dave and I were really just getting fall-down drunk with each other and making jokes and the women who’d go on these (introductory) dates with us would just be horrified”. Let’s just say that the scene will put you in stitches and leave you wanting to come back for a second viewing.
