ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) The Buffalo Bills have placed their faith in quarterback Tyrod Taylor by signing him to a contract extension.

The deal, reportedly for six years, is worth an average of $15 million per season.

The Bills announced an extension for the sixth-year pro on Friday. There are certainly two schools of thought on that, and you could make a compelling argument for each.

Especially when it involves his starting quarterback. They’ve been in “quarterback purgatory” for far too long and although the jury is still out on whether Taylor can win in the postseason, the Bills aren’t going to find anyone better in the draft and were extremely lucky to get him in free agency.

Buffalo’s offense made significant jumps under Taylor past year and after the team retooled its roster by adding several established threats, including running back LeSean McCoy and tight end Charles Clay.

That said, the inherent risk is obvious.

Former first-round pick E.J. Manuel needs a strong preseason to keep his job as backup, but working in his favor is his moderate $1.6 million salary for 2016 which is fully guaranteed. Getting pen to paper, especially with a playing style like Taylor’s, is an extreme motivator.

Plus, it gives them options this offseason with cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who now can be franchise tagged without fear of losing their starting quarterback to the open market.
