Binay-Honasan tandem first to file COCs

Ultimately, there will be a three-cornered fight for presidency in the Philippines in the upcoming polls with the three leading candidates – Binay, Roxas, and Poe – slugging it out after the rumored fourth presidential candidate, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, finally announced on Monday not to join the presidential derby.

SURPRISE CANDIDACIES There were other surprise candidacies that morning, along with a gallery of other presidential aspirants who claimed, among other things, being “anointed by God” and, in the case of one Daniel R. Magtira, a husband of celebrity presidential sister Kristina Bernadette “Kris” C. Aquino. “Ngayon na napakarami ka nang atraso at malapit na kitang patawarin, malapit na tayo maging friends, sasabihin mo magpapaalam ka na aalis ka sa piling namin, ‘” he recalled. “I am the result of the process that the party went through”, he added.

With more big names such as Bong Bong Marcos, Mar Roxas and Senator Grace Poe expected to file their COCs throughout the rest of the week, this area in the old city of Intramuros is seeing a taste of the election frenzy to come.

Honasan, also from Bicol Region, Binay’s running mate, is a former military officer who led several failed coup attempts against the government in the late 1980s.

“I don’t have the luxury of an ego. The problem was I did not know what to do then”, said Honasan.

Honasan said their platform consists of addressing poverty and job security.

On Monday, Binay filed his certificate of candidacy together with his running mate, Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan. Asked how this will affect his candidacy, Honasan said he trusts in the fairness of the judicial system.

“But unfortunately, a few of the cameras here did not follow instructions and again, they immediately tried to get footage”. The group pressed against the barriers of the designated area, took up space for the candidates and thus delayed the conference. The candidates’ supporters may instead view the COC filing through a live feed which will projected on two widescreens outside the Comelec office, Bautista said.
