Bishop Tobin: Pope’s visit important for the Catholic Church

On a broader scale, Bishop Malone thinks Pope Francis has given what he calls a “welcoming face” to the Catholic church, and says there’s a wonderful positive energy surrounding his visit. But it’s the less glamorous parts of the schedule that may define the trip such as the many schools, prisons and social centers he’s planned to go to. They secured funding and invited the entire staff to participate. The first group leaves Tuesday and will fly to Philadelphia to participate in some of the World Meeting of Families events this week.

“We’re inviting the families to pray together and write their intentions on the back of Pope Francis, and then I’m going to collect all of these paper popes and take their intentions with me to Philadelphia”, Tierney said.

Priscilla Carlucci from Christ Our Savior Parish in Struthers says their two bus-fulls will stay overnight in Reading, Pennsylvania, about an hour west of Philly.

“We have the opportunity (with) someone who’s well-respected around the world to make connections with our students”, said Mona Passman, principal at Cretin-Derham Hall Catholic High School in St. Paul.

Assistant Principal Laura Sieve helped plan the trip for the entire staff.

Although the pope’s words about not judging gays and lesbians are encouraging, the fact remains that many LGBT people who practice Catholicism feel that they are still being subjected to abandonment by their faith.
