BJP, Congress have fielded moneybags in RS polls: Sharad Yadav

The Congress has 17 MLAs in the House while INLD has 19.

In Uttar Pradesh, Congress leader Kapil Sibal managed to defeat BJP-backed independent candidate Preeti Mahapatra, without the anticipated support of BSP.

Bahujan Samaj Party chose not to transfer its 12 surplus votes with it two candidates Mishra getting 39 votes and Sidhharth 42.

“Congress has won all the Rajya Sabha seats it had contested during these elections”, Singh informed the reporters. Of the four vacancies in Karnataka, the Congress won three and BJP one.

The counting of votes is expected to begin at 5 pm on Saturday and the results declared around 7 pm same day.

The BJP had fielded Union minister Venkaiah Naidu, party’s national vice-president Om Prakash Mathur, former RBI official and vice-president of Ambedkar Peeth Ramkumar Verma and member of erstwhile Dungarpur royal family Harsh Vardhan Singh. The BJP had supported Independent Preeti Mahapatra to make Sibal’s election hard but she conceded defeat having received only the BJP’s extra 18 votes.

He rejected allegations of any horse trading saying nothing of that sort happened. “After votes which were needed for my victory, the share of my votes got transferred to Chandra and this took tally of his votes to 29”, he said.

After Anand’s defeat, leader of opposition in Haryana Assembly and INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala blamed Congress for it.

In Uttar Pradesh, all seven candidates of the ruling Samajwadi Party won easily. He secured 40 votes.

There were murmurs as the four BSP MLAs did not turn up for voting until 11 a.m.

If it was Congress at the receiving end in Haryana, revolt-hit Janatal Dal (Secular) suffered the humiliation in Karnataka with eight of its MLAs cross voting in favour of Congress.

“We have sought a report from the PCC and the Independent candidate and we are going to lodge a complaint with the Election Commission about the way the election was conducted”, B K Hariprasad, party’s general secretary incharge for Haryana told reporters on Saturday.

JD (S) sources said the party is mulling expelling all five JD (S) MLAs, especially if they follow suit in the Rajya Sabha polls, where the MLAs need to show their ballots to party agents before voting.

Nirmala Seetharaman secured 46 votes with BJP, which with 44 members was short of one vote, making up the shortfall comfortably.
