Poonam Madam, 41, was talking to slum-dwellers during a demolition drive in Jamnagar when a thin concrete sheet covering the eight-foot-deep drain caved in.
According to her doctor S Maheshwari, the leader suffered a 4-inch deep gash on her head besides injuries on her shoulder and foot. The police authorities and other locals came to her rescue and rushed her to the hospital. The video also shows people rushing to save her but due to the height of the sides of the sewage channel it proves to be a very daunting task. From here, she was airlifted to Mumbai for further treatment. “One of them died”, said local Congress councillor Altaf Khafi. “We felt she required to be taken to a Mumbai hospital as a precautionary measure”, he said.
Dr Baldev Sarda at Gokul Hospital added: “She had some broken tissues and bruises on her shoulder”.

Maadam had gone to meet residents of Jalaram slum who were opposing a demolition drive and had entered into an altercation with the employees of the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation (JMC). “There is nothing to worry about”.
