Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s name may be doing rounds as the chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh, but it is Sultanpur MP Varun Gandhi who has emerged as the BJP “poster boy” here with hundreds of his hoardings dotting the city where the party is holding its two-day National Executive conclave.

While the PM spoke on the need for commitment and renewal, BJP chief Amit Shah made a detailed reference to the party and government’s resolve to balance reforms and growth with welfare and pro-poor policies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived here for the meet earlier today, told the BJP workers not to take the opposition lightly and counter their accusations by working for the people.

The war of words between the TRS and the BJP over the latter’s national president Amit Shah’s claims that the Centre has released Rs 90,000 crore to the TS government but the money has not reached the people, continued on Sunday.

Also, before the 2012 assembly polls of Uttar Pradesh, the BJP had organised a national executive meeting in state capital Lucknow.

He further said the nation can not progress as long as Uttar Pradesh does not embark on the path of development.

The rally, interestingly, signalled a slight change in BJP’s election campaign in the first rally addressed by PM specifically targeted at polls.

Prasad quoted Shah as saying in his speech that along with the Mathura blow-up, the Kairana “exodus” reflected a “serious lack of governance and development in India’s biggest state”. “We will fight elections with full preparedness and form a government with a majority…” “People should elect the saffron party if they don’t want Kairana type exodus in rest of the state”, Shah in a clear message that party would go aggressively to safeguard the interests of hindu community.

However, it is more than obvious that the party has no intention of announcing or taking a final call on its CM candidate in this National Executive.

While there are going to be three resolutions – political, economic and one related to foreign affairs – all eyes will be on the political session, which will deal with 2017 elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh. He also expressed confidence that the party will return to power in the Centre in 2019 as well.

Not sparing the BSP, the other major player in the state, the Prime Minister said Mayawati and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav take turns to accuse each other’s government of indulging in corruption but take no action when each one comes to power.
