Black Actors Ready for Chris Rock to Shake up Oscar Show

Now, as for who deserves future Academy recognition the most let’s begin, shall we? There are many talents that are unique to individuals of all colors and each person brings to the forefront a new perspective that when heard with the heart, can make lives richer.

The Academy has this year drawn criticism for dismissing performances from non-white actors such including Will Smith in Concussion, Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation and Samuel L. Jackson in The Hateful Eight.

It is not just the Oscars that have a diversity problem. Chris Rock, a well-known black comedian, is hosting, and he could not have been a better choice.

Also, when taking into consideration that Winslet won the Globe when Vikander wasn’t nominated (she was nominated in the leading actress category, whereas she’s nominated in supporting at the Oscars), it makes Vikander’s Oscar win more of a reality.

Other presenters include Priyanka Chopra, Common, Benicio del Toro, Louis Gossett Jr, Kevin Hart, Quincy Jones, Byung-hun Lee, Whoopi Goldberg, Dev Patel, Kerry Washington, The Weeknd, Sofia Vergara and Pharrell Williams. Though the presenters are not necessarily the highlight of the night, it is always fun to see our favorite stars together in one room.

Sure, I’ve got an excuse: babies take up a lot of time, and when you do break free from the vice grip of their tiny little fingers, the last thing you want to do is spend $15 an hour on a babysitter so you can go to the movies.

Prediction: This race is a tight one with two clear frontrunners. This is a new addition from producers Hudlin and David Hill meant to keep the winners’ speeches shorter and more emotional. “I was sitting at home with my Oscar, like ‘What’s all the hubbub?” But Abrahamson’s indie film hit “Room”, a wonderfully acted, manipulative drama about a young mother (Brie Larson) and son (Jacob Tremblay) held captive by a sexual predator, has four nominations, all in major categories, including best picture.

Best Picture could be a two-horse race between “The Revenant” (listed at 4/7) and true story “Spotlight” (at a close 2/1). Relative newcomer to English-speaking entertainment, Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”) has a slight lead in her category at 8/15, having been previously nominated as a lead actress for “The Danish Girl” until this point in awards season. Kate Winslet (“Steve Jobs”) and Rooney Mara (“Carol”) are tied in second position at 7/2. “I know he will be relevant and he’s going to say, he’s going to say it how he sees it so I might have to watch because of that”. And we’ll have two competitive awards: film of the year and television show of the year. His column appears weekly in Pulp.
