Black Cats and Halloween

“Some people are superstitious about black cats and kittens and will not consider adopting one, and this is a major cause of them being overlooked”.

Happy black cat day to all the black cats out there – a day dedicated to celebrating cats with fur blacker than the night sky.

For centuries black cats have faced a stigma due to their historical inclusion in stories of witches and the occult.

The internet, after all, loves cats. “In 2014, black and black-and-white cats accounted for nearly half of all cats taken in by us and spent on average 52 days in care, compared to around 33 days for silver tabbies”, says the charity.

Scott Delucchi, spokesman for the group, said shelters have traditionally shied away from black cat adoptions in October, suspecting that not everyone looking for a black cat has good intentions or has thought the adoption through. “We have a counseling process with every adoption and we train our counselors to use their judgement when placing all animals into new homes”.

“There are a number of reasons for this, ranging from the fact that black cats are harder to tell apart than cats with more distinctive markings and the fact that black animals tend not to photograph as well”.

Which is all very well, but when is men’s black cat day?

Research shows a notable 12 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds think black cats are unlucky, while only two per cent of those aged over 55 agree with that notion.

As part of the day, black cat owners on social media have been showing off their pets, hoping to disprove the superstitions and show black cats make as good a pet as any other cat.
