USA e-commerce sales surged on Thanksgiving, raising questions about the fate of brick-and-mortar Black Friday promotions, the traditional kickoff to the holiday season.

But this year was an altogether more sedate affair, not just in Huddersfield but around the United Kingdom, where major centres including the Trafford Centre in Manchester and Liverpool One were practically deserted.

The move toward earlier discounts was intensified this year because many retailers struggled with overstocked warehouses and store shelves heading into the fall, Christopher said.

Toys R Us CEO Dave Brandon said the company “got off to a good start last night”, and its Times Square flagship had “lines of people down the street when we opened the doors at 5 o’clock”.

Although he does not traditionally shop on Black Friday, Alan Batchelor of Vacaville was at Best Buy to make a purchase.

Despite the earlier start of those who plan to shop over the holiday weekend, most will do it on Black Friday, according to the National Retail Federation.

In its “2015 Holiday Shopping Predictions” report issued earlier, Adobe Digital Index predicted that Americans will spend an upward of Dollars 83 billion online this holiday season, representing the biggest share of annual sales and the highest online sales in history.

Spending is predicted to soar by 31% on previous year as stores offer discounts exclusively on the internet following the Black Friday weekend. As of 10 a.m. Thursday, there were already 20 chairs outside of Best Buy, O’Shea said; once the deals kicked off, people were snatching up multiple TVs.

Consumer analyst Richard Hyman said: “Last year I think the industry embraced Black Friday with tremendous enthusiasm and dived in”. “We weren’t standing in line today”, she said.

Like many, Herring has taken advantage of online shopping in recent years.

Cyber security expert Dave Whitelegg urged shoppers seeking bargains online to be vigilant as hackers were targeting people “all the time”.

“We believe Thanksgiving shopping was a bust”, analysts at Sun Trust Robinson Humphrey said in a research note.
