The hour-long drama is set up at Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, which is housed out of Warner Bros. The project has been in the works for quite some time and was taken out to the network’s just last week, with Fox landing it in a competitive situation. Adopting the identity Black Lightning, he becomes a costumed superhero who goes on to serve as team member of both the Outsiders and the Justice League. He is also the executive producer behind all of The CW’s DC shows, including Arrow, DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow, The Flash and CBS transplant Supergirl.
For Fox, Black Lightning could potentially join the network’s DC Comics-inspired drama, Gotham, which centers on a young Bruce Wayne and features other characters from the Batman comics including Catwoman, Penquin and Poison Ivy. The show is based on the DC character created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden.
For Berlanti and Schechter, “Black Lightning” is one of many projects in the superhero genre under their belt.
For both Berlanti and the Akils, this marks the second high-profile sale this season. Now, FOX has announced it has given the series a pilot production commitment. The company is repped by WME.
