‘Black Lives Matter Not Black Friday’: Protesters

Black Lives Matter rallied in Cincinnati Friday, moving through Over-the-Rhine to the Hamilton County Courthouse. Led by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the protesters called for the ouster of the city police superintendent and other leaders. However, later, police said they had arrested at least two people – one for trying to break a window.

As part of the nationwide movement, protesters gathered in downtown San Diego Friday because ‘Black Lives Matter not Black Friday’.

The protesters who blocked traffic in Duluth are standing in solidarity for the five victims who were hurt during a protest in Minneapolis this week. One driver was spotted reading a book while stopped due to the protest, but many expressed frustration.

Overall, the protests that stretched from police headquarters to the courthouse were peaceful and numerous protestors we spoke with said they hope the protests will stay that way. Police said he was reaching for an officer’s gun when he was shot.

Van Dyke was charged this week with murder over the teenager’s death. “We will be having conversations only”, he said. The U.S. Justice Department has also opened an inquiry.

A police statement says officers responded to the home just before 8 p.m. Friday.

Earlier in the day, shoppers at Macy’s local flagship store were taken aback when protesters poured onto the sales floor, chanting and hoisting signs as they wound past perfume counters and handbag displays. Hundreds of protesters marched and chanted near Westlake Plaza, the site of Friday evening’s annual Christmas tree lighting.

Over the past year, protests against killings of unarmed black men and women – some videotaped with phones or police cameras – have rocked a number of USA cities. After a rally at the park, people began marching through Northeast Portland.
