A black man who was very vocal in his support of the Mississippi state flag has died in a vehicle crash following an argument with a group of black men in another vehicle.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Johnny Poulos said to Therese Apel of the Clarion-Ledger the accident took place near the Pontotoc County line around 11:20 a.m. and that the two were traveling west in a 2005 Ford Explorer when it left the road, then the driver overcorrected, and it flipped.

A passenger in Harvey’s auto, Arlene Barnum, tells The Associated Press that Hervey swerved and crashed after another vehicle carrying four or five young black men pulled up alongside them, yelling and looking raging. Barnum said Hervey yelled something back at the other vehicle before losing control and crashing.

Barnum, a veteran, had time to post some truly harrowing messages to her Facebook wall as the accident unfolded. At some point, that’s what she said caused the crash.

Hervey was driving home from a rally to preserve the Linn Park Confederate Monument in Birmingham, Alabama, the Daily Mail reports.

The McAlester News-Capital said that Barnum was taken from the scene by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The couple was in Barnum’s SUV, which showed no Confederate flag stickers or memorabilia.

The details of this fatal accident are now under investigation. The Associated Press reports that troopers did not comment on whether or not they were investigating Barnum’s account. Supporters say it is a symbol of Southern heritage, while opponents argue it represents slavery and racism. The article quotes attorney Ginger Barbee, who represents the rally’s sponsor, as saying, “I want the Birmingham Parks and Recreations board to know that they are ultimately responsible for this tragedy”. Spending hours marching in downtown Oxford and waving a confederate flag was all part of his typical day.
