BlackBerry to end production of Classic smartphone

U.S. Senators and staff were informed in a memo last week that production of BlackBerry 10 devices has been discontinued, opening the door for the Senate to move on from the long-trusted devices. “Future carrier order fulfillment will not be guaranteed due to limited remaining stock”. These handsets include BlackBerry Classic, BlackBerry Passport, BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Z30 and BlackBerry Q10 smartphones.

“For offices wishing to make the transition from BlackBerry devices to other platforms, Verizon has agreed to suspend eligibility upgrade requirements for users migrating to Samsung S6 Android devices”, the letter said.

The U.S. Senate will discontinue offering BlackBerry mobile phones to its staff. Apple or Samsung smartphones are expected to replace BlackBerry devices in the U.S. Senate.

The company will continue to support its BlackBerry 10 operating system with software updates, with a new version scheduled for release in August, Pini said.

BlackBerry cleared the issue out, saying that there might have been a misunderstanding on the matter. Is this really becomes a possibility then Blackberry will emerge as the strongest supplier of mobile devices in the world. As soon as this declaration was made people expressed interest in buying Blackberry devices again, because no matter how many companies have produced smartphones, corporates and working people benefited more from having the Blackberry devices at their disposal. Previous year the company launched its first Android-powered smartphone named Blackberry Priv.

However, during that time, Android as well as iOS have slowly crowded out Blackberry from the market.

It also confirmed that the company is still planning to release upgrades to its own OS though to at least next year.

BlackBerry reported a loss of $671 million and an over 30 per cent drop in revenue during the three months ended May 31.

It looks like the days of Blackberry being the governments phone of choice is now officially over. Members of the Senate and their staffers with work-issued phones will be making the leap into future, effectively catching up to current trends.
