Blackroom Kickstarter Cancelled, Will Start Again With Gameplay Demo

In the four days the campaign was live, Blackroom attracted a solid amount of money – $131,052 worth of pledges from Monday to Thursday.

There are a lot of elements at play here but one of the biggest is that the campaign wasn’t going particularly well and it’s far better to cancel yourself then risk a very public failure for a project that’s at such an early stage. The sheer amount of funding and backers they already had is impressive considering that all they presented were concept art shots of the Blackroom game.

Blackroom was pitched as a “visceral, varied and violent shooter” inspired by the games both men worked on at iD Software.

For instance, they could introduce laser weapons as well as revolvers from the old west. The holographic world would also mean that any setting would also be available. The Night Work Games team carries on that history of innovation with Blackroom, with a focus on fast-paced action, pushing technical boundaries and developing community-focused, mod-friendly games. Hopefully, Romero and Carmack will be able to cook up a demo with enough substance to win more backers over.

If it’s a good demo, I guarantee the gaming community will have this one backed. Save a handful of pieces of artwork, Romero and Carmack had little game to show. It seems many people, especially PC players, were really interested in seeing a demo before stumping up cash. Still, it does not mean that Romero and Carmack won’t be able to deliver another great game with their own team. Instead, they want to do it the right way and will finish the demo then hit reset. An update posted on the project’s Kickstarter page explains the team is responding to feedback and will create a demo for the title before continuing the campaign in earnest.
