Matthews said it’s hard to keep students safe if they’re not inside the school.

“We want to speak up as students to promote sensible gun control to our lawmakers”, Smith said. Some people, including the National Rifle Association, which has lost significant support in past weeks, feel the presence of guns should be increased in both schools and throughout communities, at large.

The walkout starts at 10:00 a.m. across every time zone on March 14, to protest Congress’s inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing schools and neighborhoods, according to the release.

Due to safety concerns, this specific walkout is only for BHS students and staff. Parents can help by allowing their students to have autonomy and make their own decision regarding the walkout.

Near the end of last month, around 60 students at Newton High School walked out of class to protest gun violence.

The Safe-Way Bus Company has donated a bus to the school district so they can attend the march in St. Paul.

In Novi, schools are warning about a safety risk associated with the walkout. Absences and early departures would be recorded, but not counted against students, according to the DOE. “For students who were actually in the building, involved-it’s, it’s very tough”.

The panel will hold a series of public hearings to talk about safety in schools, including improved reporting measures for suspicious people, heightened campus security, increased mental health resources for students and safe storage of firearms.

Beginning at 9:55 a.m., if students have written permission, they may leave study hall or the commons area. It’s the first time the school has had a full day of classes since the Valentine’s Day shooting.

A statement posted to the Carlisle walkout’s Twitter account indicates that the students “understand and respect” the significance of the right to bear arms, but demand sensible gun control that does not also infringe upon Second Amendment rights. “We’re just trying to raise awareness”, she said.

The district has asked that the walkout not to be a political event, with no signs or posters. Hundreds of students poured out of Cherry Hill High School East on February 27, marched around the school track and nearby streets.

Many Democrats think the bill didn’t go far enough because it doesn’t include a ban on assault-style rifles or large-capacity magazines.
