Gabbert performed well during the 49ers’ 17-16 win against Atlanta Sunday. With the bye week coming and a trip to Seattle looming after that, 49ers coach Jim Tomsula won’t commit to a second straight start for Gabbert.

When the quarterback situation is as dire as San Francisco’s, it’s naturally a week-to-week proposition. After announcing that Kendall Gaskins would start at running back, the Niners instead started Shaun Draughn, who signed with the team on Monday. Tomsula made his decision and cleared it with General Manager Trent Baalke and thinks it will be beneficial to the team and for Kaepernick.
Another possible reason to start Gabbert against the Seahawks is Kaepernick’s track record vs. Seattle. Sure, the first-year coach might need to run it by the big bosses first.

The team looked inspired, in fact, the team looked like the 2013 49ers with a grinding running game, a stifling defense and with a quarterback who does just enough to win.
Gabbert is a smarter quarterback than Kaepernick. There are a lot of questions surrounding the team as it heads into an important bye week. He finished the game with a passer rating of 76.2 and, in the second half, passed for only 70 yards, threw two picks and posted a rating of 41.2.
