Blast kills five in Borno market

The Chadian army announced on Friday that it has killed more than 100 suspected Boko Haram fighters in the past two weeks during an ongoing offensive in four villages in the Lake Chad Basin region.

Boko Haram extremists slit the throats of 10 fishermen in villages near Baga on the shores of the Lake Chad in northeastern Nigeria, a leading fisherman and a resident said Thursday.

Some of the captives said they were in the Takfiri terrorist group’s captivity for as long as a year before they were rescued, adding that they were waiting for their death.

The activities of “of fifth columnists in the military and other security agencies who leaked operational plans and other sensitive military information to the terrorists” also made the fight against Boko Haram insurgents “particularly difficult”, he said.

On Thursday Nigeria’s army said it rescued 59 women, children, and old men being held hostage by Boko Haram Islamic militants.

Biya said terrorism threatened social peace and security in the countries around Lake Chad, particularly in Cameroon and Nigeria.

Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands of civilians, including women and children, with many either forced or indoctrinated into joining the extremists, rights groups say.

The regional army would become operational starting Friday and will be headed by a Nigerian army general.

A woman described by locals as mentally unstable blew blew herself up last Sunday at a crowded market in Damaturu, capital of neighbouring Yobe state, killing at least 14 people.

The two Heads of State welcomed the first meeting yesterday in Yaounde of Governors of contiguous states and regions on the Nigeria-Cameroon border and called for regular meetings of the Governors to strengthen collaboration between the two countries.
