Blast near mosque in shopian bomb defused near hizbul militant s house

In an attack on the Indian Army forces, one jawan was arrested and one was injured unidentified terrorists opened fire in Jammu & south Kashmir Shopian District on Wednesday.

“People discovered an inverted metallic tumbler in the mosque compound”, police said.

He said that the injured were rushed to a hospital after the explosion. “Someone touched it, triggering the blast”, a police official said.

“When a caretaker went to pick it up, the glass exploded with a deafening sound”, Dar said.

Police sources said that army cordoned off Theorno village in the Imam Sahab area of Shopian and held house to house searches.

The family members called the police following which the bomb disposal squad arrived at the spot and the grenade was defused.

Police suspect that attackers had “planted” the grenade outside the mosque in Trenz locality of Shopian.

Government forces have been on heightened alert in the southern Kashmir valley, where police say sizeable and locally trained armed groups have been operating for months.

“All of them sustained minor splinter injuries and they are stable now”, he said.

Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack.

While violence tied to anti-India rebels has escalated in recent weeks, Thursday’s blast was considered rare as there have been very few attacks near Muslim places of worship.
