Blast on ferry off Indonesia’s Bali island kills 2, injures 18

Britons were among the 35 people on board the Gili Cat II ferry when the explosion took place 200m from the Bali mainland.

An explosion on a tourist boat off the Indonesian island of Bali has killed an Austrian child and injured at least 14 other people, according to the Austrian Foreign Ministry.

The speed boat was traveling from Padang Bai port in eastern Bali to nearby Gili Island when the fire broke out at 9:35 a.m. local time, Guru said. The passengers on board of recreation boat Gilicat 2 were with English, German, Holland, French, Italian and Spanish nationalities, while the crew were Indonesians.

“Five minutes after the boat departed, only around 200 meters from the harbor, smoke was seen coming from the boat, then an explosion was heard”, Karangasem Police chief Adj. Sr.

“The explosion come from the fuel tank and the engine”.

There were no Australians on board, according to Mr Sudarso.

The ferry was travelling between the resort islands of Bali and Lombok when the explosion happened.

Sudarso said he believed a malfunctioning battery near the fuel tank may have caused the accident.
