The explosion occurred around 8:30 p.m.in the Chelsea neighborhood, according to J. Peter Donald of the New York City Police Department.
Police confirmed they were called to an incident at the intersection of 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue.
It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion or if there were any injuries.
“Just heard a loud boom in the restaurant and initially I thought something fell on our building”, he told The Huffington Post. Photos on social media appeared to show a trash bin that was purported to have been mangled in the blast.
