Blaze destroys 34 homes, 10 outbuildings

Before a search and rescue team arrived, they were found by volunteer firefighters and a bulldozer crew and flown by helicopter to a safe area near Bixby Bridge.

The chaos continued when a privately hired bulldozer rolled over while fighting the fire, resulting in minor damage.

No further information on the identity of the person who died or the circumstances around the death was immediately available.

“Acting Governor Tom Torlakson today issued emergency proclamations for Los Angeles and Monterey counties due to the effects of the Sand and Soberanes fires, which have burned tens of thousands of acres of land, threatened thousands of homes and other structures and caused the evacuation of residents”, read a statement from California Gov. They had little water and food.

The Soberanes Fire has scorched almost 9510 hectares at the edge of the Los Padres National Forest since it broke out on Friday and some 2300 firefighters had the blaze about 10 per cent contained on Wednesday, officials said.

When the fire broke out, the men became stranded and didn’t know which direction would lead them to safety, the station reported. Now there are 3,079 personnel, 296 engines, 19 water tenders, 14 helicopters, six air tankers, 59 hand crews, and 60 bulldozers battling the blaze.

To the south, firefighters have made progress containing a huge, deadly blaze in mountains outside Los Angeles, allowing authorities to let most of 20,000 people evacuated over the weekend to return home.

In neighboring Bridger-Teton National Forest, a fire grew to 26 square miles and was partially contained.

Pacific Coast Highway remained open Wednesday, but its signature views were marred by a dark haze.

The fire erupted Friday afternoon in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles County, a man killed in the Sand Fire was identified as Robert Bresnick, 67, whose body was found Saturday inside a burned-out vehicle in a driveway, county officials said.

At least 18 homes have been destroyed.

Another 10 outbuildings also have been razed by the blaze that has charred 37 square miles (93 sq. kilometers).

A wildfire was fouling the summer season on a beloved and scenic stretch of the California coast, where smoke and the threat of flames forced the closure of state parks near Big Sur.

The fire in rugged wilderness between the northern edge of Los Angeles and the suburban city of Santa Clarita grew slightly to almost 60 square miles (154 square kilometers). The fire was 40% contained as of Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
