Blazers help Cavaliers unload Haywood, Miller

The Cleveland Cavaliers make the decision to re-sign forward James Jones for the 2015-16 season on a veteran’s minimum contract. The Cavs had reportedly reached its salary cap and further financial assessment is needed to finalize the deal concerning Haywood.

The second-round pick acquired by the Cavaliers will be the asset used to move Haywood to a team with enough cap space to absorb his contract.

Guaranteeing Haywood’s contract would take the team much closer to the salary floor, however.

Miller is scheduled to make $2.9 million this season, the final year of his current contract. The Cavs will also receive cash in the deal, sources said. On Thursday, Cav sent Rakeem Christmas to the Pacers.

Cleveland’s payroll is just over $100 million – without an agreement yet in place for restricted free agent Tristan Thompson, who’s expected to get a deal north of the $13 million a year he rejected in the preseason.

The Trail Blazers lost a pair of big men in LaMarcus Aldridge and Robin Lopez, so they might actually be able to use Haywood but the more likely scenario has him being bought out.

While the Blazers’ reported interest in Delly appears to be mostly speculative, the team could use their $5.5 mid-level exception to steal him away from the Cavs, too. The Jazz wouldn’t mind getting Hayward because he’ll translate into cap space next summer, which will come in handy to them. Who will they get is the exciting part now and is an interesting debate topic. The Cavaliers added Mo Williams and Richard Jefferson, and will probably end up bringing back J.R. Smith and even Matthew Dellavedova.
