Blue Jays blow out Mariners, Happ wins 20th
Cano delivered a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning as the Seattle Mariners avoided a sweep with 2-1 victory over Toronto on Wednesday, preventing the Blue Jays from extending their wild card lead.

“We were the benefactor of some miscues by them”, Mariners manager Scott Servais said. A lot of games left and the position we’re in, we just have to finish strong. This one didn’t hit Walker, but struck one of the many Blue Jays’ fans packed into the second level of Edgar’s Cantina. Carrera added an RBI single two batters later and came around from first base to score on Devon Travis’s pop-up single near the right-field line.Encarnacion, who started the inning with a strikeout before nine consecutive batters reached base, added an RBI double in a frame that saw the Blue Jays pile up eight hits and a walk sandwiched between the first and second outs.Martin’s two-run homer tied the score 2-2 after Cano drove in two runs in the third with a odd, seeing-eye triple. With two outs and runners on second and third, Cano hit a sharp grounder to the left of Toronto second baseman Travis, who slid to make a play on the ball – only to have it bounce off his knee and fly all the way into the right-field corner.Six consecutive Toronto hitters recorded hits to chase Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma in the fourth.
“It’s incredible”, said Estrada. “I think that should be the focus”.
From watching the Toronto Blue Jays play so well in July/August, it’s hard to fathom the poor play we saw again this week. “It gave us a lot of energy in the dugout”.
2B Robinson Cano finally broke out of his slump with a big hit Tuesday, although his two-run triple in the third inning wasn’t exactly a towering shot. The Mariners now have an open date Thursday before resuming their push with three weekend games at Minnesota.
The drama was just beginning.
Toronto’s Jays bats were held silent by Felix Hernandez, who allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings.
Osuna came back out in the bottom of the ninth got two quick outs and then the fun began.
Happ was the patient beneficiary when the Jays took the lead with an eight-run fourth inning. Suddenly it was white knuckle time. Then Ben Gamel bunted.
SEATTLE: The Mariners are 8-2 in Iwakuma’s last 10 starts versus American League East opponents and are 8-2 in his last 10 home outings as well. He could have been saved the earned run if Kevin Pillar hadn’t dropped Norichika Aoki’s single, trying to bare-hand it and make a quick throw home. Both teams are 2½ games clear of Detroit and three ahead of Seattle and Houston.
Whatever Walker was throwing, Encarnacion seemed to like it. Over the first six innings, the only baserunner to advance past first base was Donaldson, who doubled leading off the fourth inning.
Oakland scored on second baseman Jose Altuve’s error with two outs in the ninth to pull within 6-5. At 21 years, 212 days, Marquez was the second-youngest pitcher in Rockies’ history to earn his first win. “His ball has some run and I just managed to get the head out and I connected”.
SEATTLE-While he may not fit the modern day mould of a Most Valuable Player (perennial AL MVP candidate Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels typically comes to mind), that doesn’t make Toronto Blue Jays First Baseman/Designated Hitter Edwin Encarnacion any less deserving of consideration for the 2016 AL MVP Award. “I have a feeling we’ll get a few more hits”. “Lately, I’m not sure what’s been going on when I’ve struggled a little bit”.
“I thought it was a risky play (to try for third)”, Heredia admitted, “but I felt I had to do it”. But overall, in that situation, I kind of rushed my way through. Seager looked at a strike then ripped the next pitch on a low line to centre where Pillar raced in to pick it just inches above the turf for the third out. In seven games thus far at Oriole Park, Betts has homered eight times. It was a great diving catch.
The eight runs in the fourth inning were more than in any entire game, save one, this month.
Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12) was staked to a 2-0 lead, but gave up two-run homers to Russell Martin and Michael Saunders during the Blue Jays’ big inning.

We had 1241 comments, pretty good for an afternoon GameThread, especially when half the Jays fans in western Canada were at the game.
