Blue Jays trade Reyes to Rockies

The Blue Jays have acquired shortstop Troy Tulowitzki in a trade with the Rockies for Jose Reyes and minor-leaguers, according to reports from The Denver Post and Fox Sports.

Tulowitzki, an All-Star in each of the past five seasons, is batting. 305 with 12 home runs and 52 RBIs this season; Reyes, 32, is a four-time All-Star hitting. Toronto’s last playoff game was the final game of the 1993 World Series against the Phillies. They are now. 500 and three games out of the second wild card spot in the AL. His presence in Toronto’s rotation is yet another example of why the Blue Jays need so much pitching help. 285 with four HR and 34 RBI through 69 games.

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes, left, leaps out of the way after forcing out Seattle Mariners’ Seth Smith at second base and throwing to first in the third inning of a baseball game Saturday, July 25, 2015, in Seattle. That’s because the Rockies didn’t get a whole lot else for their greatest trade asset, one teams have wanted to pry from them for years.

Yes, your usual big deadline-getters like the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants are still out there.

Jay Jaffe, SI.com: “Making just $10 million in the final year of a five-year, $36.2 million deal, Cueto has been a bargain for the Reds, but he nearly certainly would have been priced out of the team’s range this winter”. It is estimated that Tulowitzki has missed 334 games between the 2007 – 2014 seasons due to various injuries and ailments.

Tulowitzki, 30, is in the fifth year of a 10-year, $157.75 million contract. Despite his enormous talent, staying on the field has proven to be hard for the two-time Gold Glover Tulowitzki. Reyes was once a Met, and was sure to be a face of the franchise along with David Wright, but New York chose to let Reyes walk in 2011. The 42-year-old has been decent for the Rockies posting a 3.63 ERA with a 3.56 FIP and 8.1 K/9 with a low 1.6 BB/9. Reyes is owed $22 million annually for the next two seasons and has a $4 million buyout for 2018. During his career, he’s had stints on the disabled list for a quadriceps tendon tear, lacerated right hand, broken left wrist and a groin injury.

At 30-years-old, Tulowitzki has long been considered to be the best player at his position. In what he’s said will be his last season, frankly I’m surprised that the Colorado Rockies would move him (and that he’d be cool with it), but if he feels like he wants to win now, hey… here’s hoping, LaTroy.

Prior to the game Monday, Weiss was asked if he had talked to Tulowitzki about handling distractions before the non-waiver trade deadline.

The Rockies, under new general manager Jeff Bridich, are not shopping either player or starting a fire sale, sources say.

How and when a player finds out that he’s been traded seems like a minor thing to get hung up on-especially since the Rockies and Tulo have been on a trade-me-don’t-trade-me see-saw for the better part of a year-but stuff like this actually does matter to the people in the clubhouse. “Basically, I told them to control what they can control”.
