Matched up against the hottest team in baseball, one inning of bad defense turned into big trouble for the Oakland Athletics. Their true offense is somewhere in between those two extremes, of course, but they’ve had one of the more productive lineups in baseball all season, including two of the American League’s top six hitters in terms of OPS, in the resurgent Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez. Oakland right-hander Kendall Graveman (6-8) allowed four runs, two earned, and five hits in 4 2-3 innings. It’s unclear what the Yankees will do with Severino if (or when) Michael Pineda is ready to return from the disabled list, but he has the chance to make five or six starts.
