Zoologist Mark Carwardine was filming an upcoming segment for the BBC nature series Big Blue Live when one whale displayed its impeccable comic timing.
Just then (29 seconds), as if on cue, a blue whale announces its presence with a noisy blow, off the vessel’s bow, leaving Carwardine beside himself and lost in the irony of the situation.
“We’ve spent all day since first light looking in one of the world’s great hotspots for blue whales – haven’t seen a thing!” he says.
He went on: ‘It just makes it so challenging. He continued, “It’s quite exciting in one way, it’s very frustrating in another, that you know they’re here but you just jolly well can’t find them”.
“Oh look. There is one”, Carwardine said.
Zoologist Mark Cawardine certainly looks like he had a whale of a time! “Actually that was a lot easier than I was expecting”. There is a whale right there. “Talk of the devil”.
Carwardine and the crew had a laugh at the surprise visitor, with someone in the background exclaiming, “You couldn’t have made that happen”.

The video concludes with some footage of the whale swimming along the surface of the water while the crew on board the boat continue to giggle.
