“He’s part of that core we have moving forward”, Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong said in a press release. “Schwartz and (Vladimir) Tarasenko, Robby Fabbri, Colton Parayko, Alex Pietrangelo, Jake Allen, we’re trying to build around these guys”.

Schwartz’s contract is a reasonable deal, it locks him up, and he has the benefit of a modified NTC that kicks in starting in 2019. Schwartz was a restricted free agent prior to signing this long-term extension with St. Louis.

The new deal helps both sides avoide an arbitration hearing that was scheduled next Wednesday in Toronto. The former first-round draft pick also skated in 20 playoff games with the Blues last season, tallying four goals and 14 points.

Schwartz missed 49 games last season after suffering a fractured left ankle at practice.

Schwartz was selected No. 14 overall by the Blues in the 2010 entry draft and made his National Hockey League debut March 17, 2012.

The Wilcox, Saskatchewan native is a two-time medal victor with Team Canada.

Between the 2013-14 and 14-15 seasons, Schwartz amassed 53 goals and 66 assists in 155 games, earning consideration for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and ability in the latter. “You’ve developed them and you’d like to keep them here”.
