BMW 3 Series Includes Plans To Take On Tesla

The obvious inclination here is to call it a “Tesla Model 3 fighter”, and what would be more 2016 than stoking rivalries between an unreleased boutique company’s drivable prototype and a hypothetical future product?

According to Auto Express the new upcoming electric BWM 3 series will keep the existing platform.

The G20, as it’s expected to be coded, is set to be the first auto in the mid-size executive segment to incorporate carbon fibre construction, as aluminium intensive competitors such as the Jaguar XE have all achieved very low emissions ratings thanks to lightness.

There is a downside to this and this is the timing of the BMW 3-Series EV.

The Tesla Model 3 will undoubtedly face major competition from the German brands including BMW, which is reportedly preparing an all-electric version of its next-generation 3 Series. As such, it’s understood BMW will add a fully-electric version in addition to the plug-in hybrid versions offered with the current model.

It is believed that the BMW 3 Series EV model will be powered by a 90kWh battery pack that should allow the BMW 3 Series to offer their customers and electric range of 300miles. They may have started with extremes of efficiency (i3) and performance (i8) but now that the concept of electrification is picking up mainstream acceptance they’re in a great position to build a pretty, performing and practical electric auto. The report suggests the all-electric 3 Series would arrive in 2020 at the earliest.
