BMW Said To Debut New Quad-Turbo Diesel In 2016

Here in the U.S., we get only a tiny nibble of BMW’s scrumptious diesel lineup, including the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo diesel and the 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo diesel.

With its three turbochargers, the current BMW Tri-turbo diesel enjoys a special position in the high-end premium market, yet the engineers in Munich have already put together a worthy replacement. A big part of the mystery is whether Bimmer will strap an electric turbo onto the existing tri-turbo engine, or add another traditional exhaust-driven blower. As said by our sister magazine Bimmertoday, BMW will launch a quad-turbo straight-six diesel for the 2016 BMW 750d. In its initial state of tune, it will send approximately 408 horsepower and an earth-shattering 590 lb-ft. of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Technically, that’s not a true quad-turbo setup in my opinion.

Alternatively, BMW could improve induction qualities by using a fourth conventional gas-driven turbocharger. Shortly after, it will trickle down to the X5 M50d, the X6 M50d and the next-gen M550d, and we also expect to see it under the hood of the upcoming X7 SUV. Either way, we’re no more likely to see a quad-turbo unit over in Canada than we were the tri-turbo setup.
