Shawn Hurwitz, the chief executive officer of Houston investment firm Maxxam Inc., was killed in an Austin-area boating accident over the weekend, a spokesman for the family said on Monday, October, 12.

A boat hit a barge around 5 a.m. Sunday and started to sink. Austin police said around 9:30 a.m. that a second person died after being transported to the hospital. One teenager is dead and three other people are hurt after a crash in Northeast Travis County.
Officials say the three others are at University Medical Center Brackenridge being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. “We don’t have a lot of details at this time and ask for a degree of privacy as his loving family and friends mourn this tragic loss”.

Hurwitz in 2007 replaced his father, Charles Hurwitz, as CEO of Maxxam, a forest products and real estate development company.
