Police say most of the City Center Motel sustained major fire damage.

Newport fire and police crews responded at 5:45 a.m.to the motel in the 500 block of Southwest Coast Highway.

Firefighters arrived to find the motel fully engulfed in flames.

An initial sweep of the motel didn’t turn up any additional victims, but four bodies were discovered in the debris of the motel later Friday, Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda told NBC News on Saturday. Guests were evacuated as the flames spread to parts of the Days Inn as well.

The other two bodies were found about four hours later in the room right above. Two of the injured guests were treated and released, but the third was taken to a burn center with burns and complications from smoke inhalation.

The 30-room motel was evacuated, and three guests were hospitalized, the statement said.

Firefighters closed Highway 101 and diverted traffic around the fire scene. “Newport Public Works will monitor the city’s water, and will flush water lines as needed”.

A temporary shelter has been set up for hotel patrons at the Newport Armory.
