Body of missing Nova Scotia soldier believed to have been found

Owen Sound Police Services have released an image of a hat that resembles the hat that missing Canadian soldier, Andrew Fitzgerald was last seen wearing on August 12th, 2016.

Fitzgerald was scheduled to take a bus to the airport that morning, where he’d head to his next base, Gagetown, N.B., then home to Cape Breton for two weeks’ leave on August 18.

“This is an extremely hard time for Andrew’s family, friends and extended family”, Lt. -Col.

The Canadian Armed Forces, Ontario Provincial Police, and the Owen Sound Police combined their resources, along with residents in the area, to try and find Fitzgerald.

Police say the body was located near the water treatment facility on the east shore of the Owen Sound harbour.

He was last seen in the area of 16th Street and 9th Avenue East in Owen Sound at the Petro Canada Gas bar at roughly 4:30 AM Saturday morning. A photo police shared of Fitzgerald as he was last seen appears to be a still from that footage. He was wearing a baseball hat, red plaid coloured button-up shirt, white tee shirt, beige trousers and black skateboarding style shoes.

“We have no reason to believe that he is a threat to the public”, Lillington said.

His parents, George Fitzgerald and Andrea Rambeau-Fitzgerald, reported him missing at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Fitzgerald’s sister, Emily, said her brother is “very outgoing, caring and always making people smile”.

“They are searching for their son, which must be the worse nightmare a parent can face”, both said.
