But Webster still expects to be nominated among a slate of candidates for Thursday’s showdown vote within the GOP ranks. Moderates within the House GOP caucus had been pushing for any plan that will avoid a shutdown while more conservative members had vowed to strip funding from Planned Parenthood programs at any cost. “The opponents are the other team – not ourselves”.
Political scientists say Mr. McCarthy created a problem for himself at a time when he can least afford it. “I’m my own man”, McCarthy said, according to one conservative in the room, Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas). That would be Tea Party-backed U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah. “You gotta at a few point move together as a cohesive unit as a Republicans”.

“This is not my circus, but unless the chosen speaker is more willing to permit consideration of bipartisan measures, Congress will keep stumbling from one manufactured crisis to another”, Doggett said on Monday. “They want to have a voice, they want their voice to be heard, they want to be legislators, and I want to make sure they have the opportunity to do that”.
Representative Cole is a member of the Rules Committee that determines amendments and how legislation is handled on the floor.
“He made a compelling case”, said North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows said of McCarthy.

McCarthy is already racking up the endorsements from his fellow House Republicans.
The other contender for the House speaker’s post, Rep. Daniel Webster, is a former speaker of the Florida Legislature. The Republican-only vote for speaker will take place this week as planned.
But it is not at all clear that Chaffetz, who says he would be a more effective communicator than McCarthy, is any better positioned to unite Republicans.
