Boehner’s tale is a political tragedy — Mercury News editorial
Boehner, who was first elected to Congress in 1990, received mixed reviews following his shocking announcement.

“You know, I think everybody was surprised by it”, said Rep. John Katko, who represents New York’s 24th Congressional District. Short term, it probably averts a threatened government shutdown this fall over funding for Planned Parenthood.
On one of the most divisive issues nationally, undocumented immigrants, McCarthy believes in a path to citizenship, which is something of a poison pill for the very conservative wing of the party.
They said they would reject any funding plan that failed to cut off support for women’s healthcare group Planned Parenthood.
Even though Mr Boehner was instrumental in pushing through “fast track” authority in June, making it easier for Mr Obama to negotiate worldwide agreements, experts say his departure is unlikely to impact the ratification of major deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
A Boehner spokesman, Kevin Smith, said on Friday that the date for elections has not yet been set.
“Who am I to pray for the pope?”
“I need a lot of hope today”, Boehner replied.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama praised him, saying he was “a good man” and was expecting other constructive things from Boehner’s end before he leaves office.
McCarthy’s formula for staying one of the most popular members of the Republican caucus is built on care and feeding of colleagues. Michael Hall, of Trenton, said “good” about Boehner’s resignation.
The two worked on health care and education when McCarthy served as Republican leader in the state assembly in the early 2000s.
“He’s got an insurgent Tea Party contingent in his party and he’s trying to moderate. We’ll make an announcement at an appropriate time”.
Boehner did not create the turmoil that undid his speakership. Rick Santorum, a Pennsylvania Republican, suggested Boehner had “changed” during his time as speaker.”While I disagree with Speaker Boehner’s politics, I appreciate his commitment and respect for this institution”. “Sometimes I think people have personal agendas and he didn’t he was for the people and for the country”.
But who will take his place? So he can go play golf, anywhere he wants in the world, and work on his tan. Though he is also known as a strong conservative, his tactics were never confrontational enough to satisfy the most conservative faction in the House. “There’s no challenge you can raise that he can’t come up with some way to get over it”.
Unless Congress acts, the federal government faces a partial shutdown on Thursday.
The House is expected to vote this week on a stop-gap spending Bill that will continue to fund the government without linking it to Planned Parenthood.
