Bogaerts, Betts help Red Sox rally past Yankees 6-5
Over on the Red Sox side, we’ll be seeing lefty Drew Pomeranz in the starting role.

Boston Red Sox’s Andrew Benintendi, left, looks back behind New York Yankees’ Austin Romine after scoring on a double by Xander Bogaerts during the third inning of a baseball game in Boston, Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016.
Trailing 5-4 in the seventh, the Red Sox took the lead with two well-placed bounces.
Mookie Betts scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Adam Warren (3-2) with two outs in the seventh inning as the American League East leaders picked up their third straight win in the series – two of them from behind – and moved to a season-high 20 games over.500. Ramirez, who started on second, went to third, stopped, then tried to score when he saw Sanchez had his back to the plate.
It seems like the Yankees have run out of gas lately, but I like Sabathia to get the win here.
A week ago, the Yankees had closed within three games of the AL East lead and were one game back for the AL’s second wild card.
Boston manager John Farrell interceded before Pedroia did something to cause his ejection. NY brought its infield in and Mookie’s Betts bounced an RBI single over the reach of shortstop Didi Gregorius, tying the game 5-5. The Red Sox’s burgeoning shortstop collected three hits, with three runs scored, a home run and three RBIs in a monster effort.
“It’s been tough and just frustrating because I felt like we were on a good roll there and just kind of haven’t been able to finish a game and come out on top the last couple”, Warren said. Castro exited in the fifth inning with a right hamstring strain, suffered while legging out a double.
Brett Gardner’s RBI triple scored Romine (single) in the third, and two batters later Sanchez followed with a two-run shot – his 15th homer in just his 40th game this year – to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead against Price.
Rodriguez homered and Bell went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Chase Headley, the second baserunner on the play, read the flight of the ball well and was just a few feet behind Gregorius when the pair crossed home plate.
Bogaerts homered off a billboard above the left-field wall in the fifth, slicing the deficit to 5-4. Matt Barnes (4-3) worked 1 1/3 innings for the win while Craig Kimbrel came on with two out in the eighth and struck out four straight batters for his second four-out save of the season – his 27th overall. Yankees manager Joe Girardi replaced Bryan Mitchell with Luis Severino after the Bogaerts blast.
NY struck first with a Brett Gardner triple to the triangle in the third to bring home Austin Romine, who had led off with a single against Price.
Both players were being sent back to NY for further tests.
“He hurt his right patellar when he slid into the wall”, Girardi said of Ellsbury.
Red Sox: Farrell said knuckleballer Steven Wright has made progress with his right shoulder that he injured diving back to a base pinch running in early August.
Price gave up five runs and nine hits in six innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. Hendricks leads the majors with a 2.03 ERA and took a no-hit bid into the ninth inning in his last start at St. Louis. “These guys had my back”, he said.
Taking the mound for the Yankees on Sunday will be lefty CC Sabathia.
