Boggs ‘back home’ as his No. 26 is retired at Fenway

Boggs’ number was worn by other players, including Lou Merloni and Brock Holt until this season, after he left the Red Sox, but he didn’t take any offense to that.

So when Boggs returned to Fenway Stadium for a ceremony honoring the 1986 Red Sox team – which lost to the Mets in seven games in the World Series – he had a conflict of interest.

Wade Boggs just got the cherry on top of his baseball career. Boggs went into the Hall of Fame in 2005 with a Red Sox cap, even with the controversy behind it. And the Red Sox will retire his No. 26 Thursday, according to the Red Sox on Twitter. The midseason trade for Dave Henderson provided a spark that most notably came in the ALCS, when his homer against California kept the Sox alive and ultimately led to a dramatic comeback that clinched the American League pennant. “I’m done. It’s the last thing that I needed”. This is where I started my career. He played in Boston for 11 years. “But it didn’t bother me that much to have it given away”.

The Red Sox lead the majors in runs scored with 274, or 5.96 per game over 46 games.

That’s right, Boggs wore his 1996 World Series championship ring. I wore 9 in honor of Ted.
