National Emergency Management Agency head Mohammed Kanar confirmed the toll at 20 dead and 91 injured.
According to him, the military engaged the terrorists in an attack at Alidawari where four corpses were initially seen on Sunday night.
Another resident named Bitrus Yohana said “we were confused, as I am speaking with you our doors are opened”.
However, it seemed the Aladuwari attack was a distraction by the insurgents to enable two female suicide bombers invade the city from another flank.
A resident who witnessed the event, Ahmed Baba, said, “She ran into Bulama Isa’s compound, shouting ‘Boko Haram, Boko Haram”.
A spokesman, Col Mustapha Anka, said that during the attack on Dawari, which is on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the security forces had intervened and killed 10 suicide bombers.
The blast came a day after the army fought Boko Haram militants west of Maiduguri, capital of Borno state and birthplace of their campaign to create an Islamic state in the northeast of Africa’s most populous country.
According to a witness, “A man saw two girls walking around and he tried to caution them to be careful as it was risky for them to be wandering when the two girls detonated themselves, killing the man and some other persons”. A second woman jumped into the fray and detonated herself.
“The gunshots and explosions in the village also scared many Polo residents, including motorists to flee in droves towards the Government Reservation Area (GRA)”. Soldiers fired back, and many civilians were caught in the crossfire, according to the soldier, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists. He said one member of the watch committee was lightly wounded.
Officials said given the massive nature of the bombs recovered from the arrested bombers, Kaduna state should count itself lucky that a major catastrophe that may have affected lives of innocent persons have been averted.

Maiduguri, a city of about one million people, now hosts nearly as many refugees, among 2.5 million people driven from their homes in the 6-year-old uprising.
