The UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs stressed that Boko Haram’s violent campaign “is as much or now even more a humanitarian catastrophe as it is a security priority”.

In another development, UNICEF said on Saturday that it will continue providing aid in the northeast despite attack on humanitarian convoy last Thursday which left aid workers injured.

UNITED NATIONS The United Nations has temporarily suspended aid deliveries in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno, the former stronghold of jihadists Boko Haram, after a humanitarian convoy was attacked, the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF said on Thursday. All other UNICEF, IOM and UNFPA staff are safe.

We are working at full strength in the Borno state capital Maiduguri. “If we don’t manage quickly to provide them with food, water and urgent medical supplies, malnutrition and disease will continue to wreak havoc”, MSF emergency program manager Hugues Robert was quoted as saying in an MSF press release.

The spokesperson pointed out that two million people remained inaccessible in Borno state, emphasizing the need to scale up assistance.

He said the joint military offensive by troops from the four countries “has led to the recapture of 80 percent of areas under Boko Haram control, the freeing of thousands of captives and the prevention of terrorist attacks”.

“If we do not act now, the human suffering will only get more extreme”, O’Brien said, adding that, “We have to stop this – we can with will, money, urgency and coordination”.

He stated that the agencies were screening and treating children for malnutrition and improving access to water and sanitation. However, the organisation also disclosed through a press release on the same day that United Nations staff will not be travelling to high risk areas such as Borno State for a while.
