Boko Haram: Nigerian Army Reinforces With Special Forces In Geidam

The Nigerian army said after repelling the attack, troops recovered a sizable arms, ammunition and other equipment, including one general goal machine gun, two rocket propelled grenades, nine AK-47 rifles and belted rounds of 7.62 (NATO) ammunition, from the terrorists. Earlier, Boko Haram Islamic extremists had attacked a rural military camp in northeastern Yobe state overnight but were repulsed by troops who killed at least 100 of the insurgents, army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman said yesterday.

Usman said the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Tukur Buratai, who visited the Brigade, warned the officers in the area to ensure that such ugly incident was not repeated.

He was also said to have driven into the town to further assess the damage by the terrorists.

The army spokesperson said he wishes to assure the public that the “isolated” incident would not be allowed to repeat itself.

“He also met with a few community leaders and Idris Aloma Polytechnic staff where he assured them of their safety and improved security”, the statement added. We reaffirm our determination and commitment to root out the Boko Haram terrorists in all their enclaves before the end of this year.

The Chief of Army Staff, however, gave the assurance that the Army would not relent in its efforts to disband the rebel group.

Buratai was received in Geidam by the GOC, 3 Division, Major General Hassan Umaru and the Acting Commander, 27 Task Force Brigade, who led the reinforcement team.

The insurgents had looted shops and fuel stations in the town the night before, an indication that the military’s sustained onslaught, which has resulted in massive blockade and seizure of supplies to Boko Haram, was beginning to take its toll on the radical Islamist sect.

Gbagedesin also reported a third attack by two male suicide bombers on a settlement of Fulani herders that he said killed 10 people.

A witness said he saw four dead bodies close to the market which the militants looted.

Kadar Lamba River is located about 28 kilometers away from Geidam town.

“The situation in Geidam is now calm and people are going about their normal businesses”, it said.
