Lashawn Merritt of the United States was third quickest in 19.94.

After they saw their names come up on the scoreboard, they huddled together, hugged and jumped up and down before grabbing their US flags from the stands. “I’ll be out there rubbing his shoulders, with a towel on him, like, ‘All right Rocky, get yourself ready, ‘” Gatlin said, doing his best impression of Burgess Meredith’s trainer character in the “Rocky” movies.

But the world records Bolt set in the 100 and 200 both came at the World Championships in 2009, five days and one day, respectively, before his 23rd birthday.

“Who wouldn’t be thankful for another medal?”

“It means I’m definitely on the right track”, Bolt said.

“I’ve got such a long stride”.

The Somali-born British runner was tripped in the 10,000 on Saturday but still recovered to win his second Olympic gold over that distance. “I guess hard work pays off”.

Bolt said he could tell in the 100 meters final Sunday that his longtime rival was “slowing down”. He’s a young kid. He has a lot of talent. In the evening’s biggest stunner, Gatlin finished third in his heat and did not qualify for the final.
