With 20 metres to go, De Grasse turned and looked three times to make sure he was clear of the rest of the field-making his fast time all the more impressive.
Bolt ran his last two Olympic 100 meter races in 9.69 and 9.63 seconds.
Bolt went up against his USA rival, Justin Gatlin, who finished second with a time of 9.89.
The final is scheduled for later tonight. That paved the way for Bolt to capture gold.
“And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, ‘Get down, ‘ and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever.’ He took our money, he took my wallet – he left my cell phone, he left my credentials”.
Phelps spent the evening with his family and wasn’t out with his teammates.
Street crime is among the litany of problems the Olympics has struggled with. Brazil deployed 85,000 soldiers and police to secure the games. The Portuguese sports minister and Australian coaches were robbed at knifepoint, a Brazilian security officer was shot in the head and killed when he took a wrong turn, and a stray bullet landed in an equestrian press conference.
The mere mention of his name Sunday night prompted roars in the stadium.
Jemima Jelagat Sumgong became the first Kenyan to win the women’s Olympic marathon, a race that featured Estonian triplets who entertained themselves and others by doing an in-sync dance with their flag draped over six shoulders. A man leapt over the railings waving a sign and two police motor bikes instantly cut him off.
Big-screen glimpses of him on the warm-up track brought roars of appreciation from the crowd and when the Jamaican entered the arena and clapped the fans they responded with a throaty roar of appreciation.
Lochte won a gold medal in the 4 X 200-meter freestyle relay.
He is the Olympic champion once again. The world’s oldest sport has undergone major changes. Matches now feature two 3-minute periods with cumulative scoring.

CHOPPY WATERS: While worries about water pollution marked the run-up to the Rio Games, it was really the whipping wind that stirred up trouble during Olympic rowing. Murray retained his title after winning the gold medal in tennis singles at the 2012 London Olympics. For the first time since 1996, the Olympic regatta was not held in a purpose-built lake, but a natural lagoon that left rowers exposed to the elements in new ways.
