Bomb blast in central Athens

A time bomb exploded outside the building of the Federation of Greek Enterprises, near Parliament in central Athens, police said, causing damage but no injuries.

Police believe that it was an attack from an urban guerrilla group in the first of its kind since the leftist Syriza government swept to power in January, promising to end austerity demanded by Greece’s creditors.

There had been no claim of responsibility for the explosion by late on Tuesday.

Local media reported that the police waited until 3 p.m. before sending in the team, but in the end no bomb was found. “All the exterior windows were blown out and there is incalculable damage to the interior from the ground floor to the sixth floor”, Cypriot Ambassador to Athens Kyriakos Kenevezos told state news agency CNA.

Windows in nearby buildings were shattered, according to Greek authorities. Police had cordoned off the area following warning telephone calls made in Greek to two Athens daily newspapers.

The number of makeshift bomb and arson attacks has risen during Greece’s continuing economic crisis.

Police gave no hint about the identity of the perpetrators but were studying footage from surveillance cameras in the area.
