The Institute, which is attached to Belgium’s federal justice department, is understood to have been helping the police and security services with their enquiries into the March bombings.
The prosecutor’s office described the incident as much more likely to be an arson attack created to destroy criminal evidence.
“It’s probably not terrorism”.
Van wymersch said it is without doubt that several people would benefit if elements from their legal cases were destroyed. “I can not confirm that there was any bomb”.
State broadcaster RTBF reported that a vehicle forced its way into the site “before exploding a bomb” early on Monday.
“The building is not yet safe to enter, Ms Van Wymersch said, so it was not possible to fully dismiss reports a bomb had exploded”.
The explosion was heard before 02:30 local time.
“The explosion was very violent”, says Pierre Meys.
“The explosion was extremely powerful. Windows of the lab were blown out dozens of metres away”.
Some 30 firefighters helped put out the resulting fire. The Islamic State group had claimed responsibility for the attack.
The lab analyzed hair samples from Salah Abdeslam, the sole surviving participant in the November 13 terrorist attacks that killed 130 people in Paris, the Times said.
The bombmaker for the Paris attacks, Najim Laachraoui, blew himself up at Brussels airport.
The metro bomber was Khalid El Bakraoui, Ibrahim’s brother.
