“Obviously, if you look at a number of these incidents, you can call them whatever you want – they are terrorism, though”, Christie said.

Authorities said that a blast that went off inside a garbage can inside a New Jersey beach city was likely meant to stop a Marine Corps charity run from taking place.

The governor said the FBI is investigating the pipe bomb incident and has “very promising leads”, The Hill reported. “We are grateful that nobody was injured, but this is a serious act of violence against the people of New Jersey”. “So that we know, but we need to know who is responsible to get them into custody”.

SEASIDE PARK, N.J. (AP) — All beaches have reopened in the Jersey Shore town where a pipe bomb exploded shortly before thousands of runners were to participate in a charity 5K race to benefit Marines and sailors. The Semper Five 5K run had been scheduled to begin shortly after 9 a.m., but the start was delayed and no runners were in proximity to the trash can when the explosion occurred.

Attorney General Christopher Porrino and Col. Rick Fuentes, superintendent of the state police, briefed Gov. Chris Christie on the investigation.

At a press conference outside Seaside Park Police headquarters on Saturday evening, Brad Cohen, the lead special agent of the FBI’s Newark office, said there was no threat to the community.

The explosion occurred around 9:30 a.m.as spectators and runners were about to line up for the start of the race, according to New Jersey 101.5.

Joggers, walkers and bikers were out and about Sunday on the boardwalk and nearby streets. He says those in the area have been through a lot, with Superstorm Sandy and its aftermath, and now the bomb blast. MacArthur says that person needs to be “tracked down and brought to justice”. The materials in the two explosions are being sent to Quantico, Va., to be inspected by investigators, but it appears that the “devices were different”.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said there is no connection so far between Saturday’s explosion in a trash can in Seaside Park and in New York, but the San Genarro Festival in Belmar was canceled for Sunday as a precaution.

One of the officials said the three devices actually appear to be three separate components of one device. “We pray for those people who were injured in those other attacks”.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the charity race would be rescheduled.
